This was not what the A4s were designed for, and this coupled with poor maintenance took their toll causing them to fall into a poor condition by the close of the war.\r\r'Bittern' is one of only three of the surviving A4 Class locomotives to still hold a mainline certificate which enables it to operate special rail excursions around the UK. Since being in preservation 'Bittern' has worn identities of a number of its scrapped Classmates including 'Dominion of New Zealand' and 'Silver Link', the first ever A4 Class locomotive built.\r\rAs modelled here 'Bittern' has returned to its original livery of LNER Garter Blue especially for the 'Mallard 75 - A4 Gathering' event at the National Railway Museum in York.

What's in the box?
\r
\r
1 x Model
\r

Golden Shuttle No. 4496 entered traffic in September 1937 in the LNER Garter Blue livery.\r\rThroughout the Second World War No. 4496 was painted in wartime black as were the majority of locomotives and on LNER locomotives they also removed the 'L' and the 'R' leaving 'NE'. It has sometimes been believed that this was done to confuse spies but also to reduce the materials and labour needed to maintain the locomotive. After the war it was re-liveried in Garter Blue and re-named 'Dwight D Eisenhower'.\r\rIn 1948 British Railways re-numbered the locomotive as No. 60008 and in November 1951 the livery was changed to BR Brunswick Green. The Castle Class was also known as the GWR 4073 Class, designed for hauling express passenger trains. Based on the earlier Star Class locomotive, 171 of the class were built over a 27 year period. Locomotive No. 5029 was named after a late 14th century castle in a small village near Frome, Somerset. Originally based at Old Oak Common in West London, ‘Nunney Castle’ famously hauled the Royal Train from Paddington to Gloucester in October 1957, and was included with other locomotives that were used for ‘life of the railway’ photographs eventually being withdrawn from service in December 1963. A year later it was sold for scrap to Woodham Bros. of Barry where it sat for 12 years. It was not until 1976 that ‘Nunney Castle’ was rescued for preservation, returning to mainline service in 1990 and currently residing at Tyseley Locomotive Works carrying an early BR emblem.

What's in the box?
\r
\r
1 x Model
\r
