By the outbreak of the Second World War, Gladiators were no longer seen as capable of defending British airspace, but the type's fighting qualities were proven in combat far from home. Alan Boyd was one of several notable Australian pilots to fly the Gladiator against Italian CR42 fighters in the Middle East, one of the RAAF's celebrated No.3 Squadron 'Originals', credited with three enemy aircraft destroyed and one probable during the squadron's first combat engagement in theatre. On 13th December 1940 Boyd claimed two more aircraft destroyed, but had his own fighter damaged, forcing a landing on the desert floor — he made running repairs to the control lines and flew back to Gerawala airfield. Over a six-week period Boyd became a Gladiator 'Ace', credited with at least six enemy aircraft destroyed, most while flying his usually assigned fighter, N5752.
\r\r
Special Features
\r
\r
Recreates N5752, flown by Alan Boyd of the RAAF's No.3 Squadron 'Originals'
\r
Marks Boyd's six-week run as a Gladiator flying ace in the Middle East
\r
Die-cast model with display base and cradle
\r
\r\r
What's in the Box
\r
\r
1 x Die-cast model
\r
1 x Cradle
\r
1 x Display base
\r
1 x Limited Edition certificate
\r
