The M36's offensive ability was based on its 90mm M3 gun, an improvement over the 76mm gun fitted to the preceding M10, which shared the same hull. The M36B1 was a fallback variant born from a shortage of hulls, leading to the M36 turret being placed on a Sherman M4A3 hull. Like all American tank destroyers of the period, the turret was open-topped to give a greater field of vision in battle.
