Its aerodynamic design was combined with the powerful German DB 601 inline engine, produced under licence by the Italian aeronautical industry. The new powerplant and strong aircraft design provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of engaging Allied fighters on equal terms. Compared with the previous generation of radial-engined fighters such as the Fiat G-50 and Macchi MC.200, its flight performance was considerably improved.
