History
The Avro Vulcan is one of Britain’s most distinctive post‑war aircraft, instantly recognised by its huge delta wing. Built to carry heavy nuclear weapons at high speed and high altitude, it became a powerful symbol of Britain’s Cold War deterrent.
The B.2 version, introduced in 1960, featured a redesigned wing and upgraded Olympus engines, giving it better performance and a more refined look. This became the most produced and best‑known Vulcan model.
Throughout the 1960s and beyond, the Vulcan represented the cutting edge of British aerospace design. Even after the UK shifted its nuclear deterrent to submarines, the Vulcan continued to serve in strike and defence roles, remaining active until the mid‑1980s.
The aircraft gained legendary status with the public, especially after the last flying Vulcan, XH558, returned to the skies in 2007. Its displays drew huge crowds and kept interest in this Cold War icon alive for a new generation.
