Ford Cortina: A British Icon (1962–1982)

Originally developed under the project name “Archbishop”, the Ford Cortina was Ford of Britain’s answer to the growing demand for a practical, affordable family car. Launched in 1962 as the Consul Cortina, it was designed to be economical, easy to maintain, and cost-effective to produce. Following a subtle facelift in 1964, it became known simply as the Cortina.
With its lightweight design and impressive handling, the Cortina quickly proved it had more to offer than just everyday driving. Ford engineers saw its potential and introduced the Cortina GT, featuring a Cosworth-tuned 1.5L Kent engine, upgraded transmission, brakes, and suspension, plus a sporty center console with additional dials. The GT model delivered thrilling performance at an unbeatable price, boasting a top speed of 95 mph and rapid acceleration.
The Cortina GT wasn’t just a hit on the streets—it made its mark in motorsport too. Homologated for rallying, it achieved numerous international victories throughout the mid-1960s. In Australia, it became a legend on the Mount Panorama circuit, dominating the Armstrong 500 in both 1963 and 1964.
