Regarded as the most sophisticated of the early Monaro models, the HG is today one of the rarest and most sought-after of the Holden coupes. Released on 26 July 1970, the HG Monaro was the last of the original coupe design concept, featuring cleaner lines, reduced and redesigned brightwork, and distinctive 'sidewinder' stripes running along the top edge of the fenders, under the windows and finishing just before the rear pillar.

For the HG GTS, the GTS badges gained black paint fill, the rocker panels received new black-out paint, and the GTS 350 variant stood out further with bold sidewinder stripes, bonnet scoop black-outs and gutsier fender and boot lid decals. Cleaner-look taillights and a redesigned grille rounded out the visual updates. Underneath, the manual HG GTS 350 retained the suspension from the HT GTS 350 and gained thicker, HT-style power front disc brakes as standard across all V8 and 6-cylinder Monaro GTS models.

Of the 155,787 HG range units produced, only 14,437 were Monaro GTS coupes.
