Turbo Trouble: Drama at the 1988 Bathurst 1000

The 1988 Bathurst 1000 was expected to be a Ford Sierra whitewash, with Dick Johnson’s team dominating the ATCC season. But controversy off the track stole headlines, with major sponsors pulling out and a wave of protests over car legality seeing vehicles stripped, rebuilt and re-tuned under pressure.

Qualifying was based on Friday’s sessions, with a Top 10 Shootout becoming an invitation-only event for 12 drivers, offering only prize money as an incentive. Ford Sierras locked out the top seven grid spots, while the Holden VL Commodore of Grice and Percy qualified 11th, nearly six seconds off pole.

From the rolling start, the Sierras surged ahead, but mechanical issues soon plagued the field. Of 48 starters, only 18 finished. Grice and Percy’s Holden battled through the chaos to finish 15th, completing 139 of 161 laps in a gritty result from a race defined by attrition.

This highly detailed 1/18 scale replica captures the race-tuned character of the Walkinshaw VL Commodore. The distinctive body kit is complemented by a bonnet scoop with cutouts aligned to the engine, while BBS wheel covers on the front wheels conceal detailed etched-metal disc brakes.

Inside, the race car features additional dashboard instrumentation, a soft-touch rubber racing seat and a 5-point racing harness. The road-car interior was stripped to accommodate the roll cage, with the door armrests removed to reflect its competition specification.

Under the bonnet, the detailed Holden V8 retains its dual throttle bodies, now connected to a large air box. The front chassis features the engine sump, exhaust system and working suspension, with the front wheels linked to the steering wheel for added functionality.

The rear chassis continues the impressive attention to detail, showcasing the drive-shaft, axle, sprung rear suspension, anti-roll bars and Panhard rod. Completing the model is a limited-edition etched metal production number mounted to the detailed chassis, along with a certificate of authenticity.
