Maxed Out: Stewart Dominates the 1974 Gold Star

The 1974 Australian Drivers’ Championship, open to Australian Formula 1 and 2 cars, saw fierce competition despite small grids. With new machinery arriving, the F5000 field stepped up — Lola T332s for Bartlett, Brown and Lawrence, an Elfin MR6 for McCormack, and Max Stewart in his proven Lola T330.

Stewart carried strong Tasman Series form into the Gold Star, winning five of six rounds — including the Australian Grand Prix — to secure the title. Kevin Bartlett, his closest rival, only broke through in the final round at Phillip Island, where he dominated from pole in his new Lola T332.

Bartlett led all 22 laps on November 24 to take a commanding win over Stewart and Kurt Seeberg, finishing second in the championship with 25 points. Stewart’s consistency earned him the 1974 CAMS Gold Star with a dominant 51-point total.

This highly detailed 1/18 scale replica captures the distinctive racing specification of the Lola. The front wheel rims feature sanded racing slicks with intricate paint finishes replicating the racing rims, while the large side-mounted radiators are finely crafted with etched-metal detailing.

The cockpit features detailed instrumentation and a lightweight racing seat stripped down to the bare essentials. The removable engine cover allows the detailed V8 to be displayed, while the air scoop on top of the engine cover feeds the engine’s demand for air. With the cover removed, the fine craftsmanship of the V8 can be appreciated, including the clamps on the velocity stacks.

The front wheels feature working suspension with metal coil springs and fully functioning steering. The rear suspension is accurately represented with metal coil springs and linkages, while the large rear tyres and distinctive rear wing complete the aggressive racing stance.

Item includes a certificate of authenticity and production number plate mounted to the chassis.
