Golden Drive: Johnnie Walker’s 1979 AGP Triumph

The 1979 Australian Grand Prix, held at Wanneroo Raceway on March 11, marked the 44th running of the event and the only time it was hosted at the Western Australian circuit. As the opening round of the Australian Drivers’ Championship, the race featured cars from Australian Formula 1, including Formula 5000 and Formula Pacific.

Johnnie Walker qualified third in his F5000 Lola T332 Chevrolet, behind Alfredo Costanzo and Larry Perkins. But on race day, a first-corner incident between the front-runners handed Walker the lead. Despite a pit stop to fix a dragging exhaust, he regained the front on the final lap after John Wright’s car suffered oil pressure issues.

Walker took the win ahead of John Bowe and Rob Butcher, completing the 63-lap race in 59m 09.72s at an average speed of 95.82 mph. He went on to claim the 1979 CAMS Gold Star, becoming the fourth driver to win both the Australian Grand Prix and the Drivers’ Championship in the same year.

This highly detailed 1/18 scale replica captures the distinctive racing specification of Walker’s Lola T332. The front wheel rims feature sanded racing slicks with intricate paint finishes replicating the racing wheels, while the large side-mounted radiators are finely crafted with etched-metal detailing.

Inside the cockpit, the detailed dashboard features comprehensive instrumentation, while the lightweight racing seat is stripped down to the bare essentials. The removable engine cover allows the detailed V8 to be displayed, including the finely reproduced engine components and clamps on the velocity stacks. An air scoop positioned on top of the engine cover feeds the V8’s demand for air.

The front suspension features metal coil springs and fully functioning steering, while the rear suspension is accurately represented with metal coil springs and detailed linkages. The large rear tyres and distinctive rear wing complete the aggressive racing stance, with the wing featuring detailed supporting struts designed to keep the rear of the car planted on the circuit.
