Product Information

Designed by Charles Collett, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Great Western Railway, ‘Nunney Castle’ No. 5029 was built at the Swindon Works in 1934. The Castle Class was also known as the GWR 4073 Class, designed for hauling express passenger trains. Based on the earlier Star Class locomotive, 171 of the class were built over a 27 year period. Locomotive No. 5029 was named after a late 14th century castle in a small village near Frome, Somerset. Originally based at Old Oak Common in West London, ‘Nunney Castle’ famously hauled the Royal Train from Paddington to Gloucester in October 1957, and was included with other locomotives that were used for ‘life of the railway’ photographs eventually being withdrawn from service in December 1963. A year later it was sold for scrap to Woodham Bros. of Barry where it sat for 12 years. It was not until 1976 that ‘Nunney Castle’ was rescued for preservation, returning to mainline service in 1990 and currently residing at Tyseley Locomotive Works carrying an early BR emblem.
