CORGI 1/32 SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE MK.I - R6775 / YT-J - FLYING OFFICER JEFFREY QUILL

Corgi Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I – R6775 / YT-J – Flying Officer Jeffrey Quill Diecast Model Aircraft

The Corgi Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I recreates R6775 'YT-J', linked to Vickers Chief Test Pilot Jeffrey Quill, the man behind the development of every Spitfire variant.

Commissioned in the RAF in 1931, Jeffrey Quill joined Vickers as a test pilot in 1936, retaining his RAF volunteer reserve status and rising to Chief Test Pilot just before the Second World War began. He became famous for flying every one of the 52 Spitfire variants tested, from the original prototype K5054 to the Mk.47 Seafire, earning him the nickname "Mr Spitfire" in some circles. Keen to contribute more directly to the war effort, Quill used his RAF contacts to arrange a combat posting during the Battle of Britain, joining the experienced pilots of No.65 (East India) Squadron, who schooled him in the finer points of aerial combat. In a brief 19-day spell with the unit he was credited with several aircraft damaged or probably destroyed, before being recalled to test flying duties by Vickers-Armstrong, whose officials judged that Quill was far too valuable to risk in combat and would contribute more by test-flying the new Spitfire Mk III.
