CORGI 1/48 BAE HARRIER GR9A - ZG478 - RAF NO.41 (R) SQN

Corgi BAe Harrier GR9A – ZG478 – RAF No.41 (R) Sqn Diecast Model Aircraft

The Corgi BAe Harrier GR9A recreates ZG478, a Fast Jet Test & Evaluation Unit aircraft flown by RAF No.41 (R) Squadron in its striking 90th anniversary tail markings.

Designed to sit at the close air support forefront of any combat situation, the Harrier GR9A was the ultimate incarnation of the type, featuring the most powerful variant of the Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine along with upgraded avionics and weapons capability. ZG478 was operated by the Coningsby-based No.41 (R) Squadron, the Fast Jet Test & Evaluation Unit, which flew sorties in close collaboration with defence manufacturers and research institutions to integrate new weapons and delivery techniques. Established as a reserve squadron on 31st March 2006, the unit operated a mixed fleet of Harriers and Tornado GR4s, with ZG478 sporting a spectacular special tail to mark No.41 Squadron's 90th anniversary that year. The double (patriarchal) cross crest is carried in honour of the squadron's first overseas deployment to the French town of St Omer during the Great War, taken from the town's flag and adopted, along with the motto 'Seek and Destroy', in early 1937. This aircraft was destroyed by fire after a heavy landing at Kandahar Airport during the War in Afghanistan in May 2009; the pilot ejected safely as flames took hold of the cockpit.
