The Corgi Consolidated B-24D Liberator recreates 'Hail Columbia', flown by Col. John 'Killer' Kane during the famous low-level raid on the Ploie?ti oil facilities.

One of the lead pilots in a force of 177 B-24 Liberators sent to attack the Ploie?ti oil production facilities, Col. John Kane had specifically requested the return of his personal aircraft 'Hail Columbia' ahead of the mission, having flown it many times before handing it over to other crews on his promotion to command the USAAF 98th Bomb Group. The raid was so vital to the Allied war effort that it had to be flown at low altitude to avoid detection and ensure accuracy, with planners anticipating a loss rate approaching 50 percent. 'Hail Columbia' led the 98th Bomb Group to the Astra Român? refinery after the target had already been struck by lead bombers, flying at rooftop height through the flames and smoke ahead. Kane released his bombs directly over the target, and with his aircraft badly damaged, set a course over the Black Sea and across Turkey to the British-controlled island of Cyprus, where he made an emergency landing. Kane was one of five 'Operation Tidal Wave' airmen awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry in the face of the enemy.
