CORGI 1/72 GLOSTER GLADIATOR MKII - N5752/NW/G - FL. OFF. ALAN BOYD

Corgi Gloster Gladiator Mk.II – N5752/NW/G – Fl. Off. Alan Boyd Diecast Model Aircraft

The Corgi Gloster Gladiator Mk.II recreates N5752, flown by Australian pilot Alan Boyd of the RAAF's No.3 Squadron against Italian fighters in the Middle East.

Although the Gladiator represented the pinnacle of RAF fighter capability on entering service at the start of 1937, it was considered essentially obsolete within the same year by the arrival of the eight-gun Hawker Hurricane. By the outbreak of the Second World War, Gladiators were no longer seen as capable of defending British airspace, but the type's fighting qualities were proven in combat far from home. Alan Boyd was one of several notable Australian pilots to fly the Gladiator against Italian CR42 fighters in the Middle East, one of the RAAF's celebrated No.3 Squadron 'Originals', credited with three enemy aircraft destroyed and one probable during the squadron's first combat engagement in theatre. On 13th December 1940 Boyd claimed two more aircraft destroyed, but had his own fighter damaged, forcing a landing on the desert floor — he made running repairs to the control lines and flew back to Gerawala airfield. Over a six-week period Boyd became a Gladiator 'Ace', credited with at least six enemy aircraft destroyed, most while flying his usually assigned fighter, N5752.
