CORGI 1/72 NORTH AMERICAN MITCHELL MARK III- HD372 'VO-B' - 'GRUMPY'

Corgi North American Mitchell Mk.II – HD372 'VO-B' 'Grumpy' Diecast Model Aircraft

The Corgi North American Mitchell Mk.II recreates 'Grumpy', one of the hardest-working RAF bombers of 139 Wing, Second Tactical Air Force, in the lead-up to and aftermath of D-Day.

Mitchells of 139 Wing were among the first strike units to move to forward operating bases in France and Belgium following the D-Day advance, flying close air support missions for Allied ground forces. The most heavily used variant in RAF service was the B-25C/D, known as the Mitchell II, of which 538 were received. This aircraft was heavily engaged in strike operations ahead of D-Day, first targeting suspected V-1 launch sites in the so-called 'No-Ball' raids before moving on to marshalling yards, communications centres and enemy airfields across northern France. She was famously photographed at Dunsfold having her 102nd mission marking painted on, and went on to complete 125 bombing missions plus two Air Sea Rescue sorties — a record for an RAF Mitchell. Her wartime record later inspired the UK-based Fighter Collection to present their own Mitchell in 'Grumpy' markings, operating the aircraft for around fifteen years between 1987 and 2003.
