The end of the 2nd World War also marked the end of propeller-driven military aircraft. As early as 1945, the US air force was calling for a new fighter to replace the P-61, jet-propelled, with a max. speed of about 550 miles per hour and suitable for high altitudes. The maiden flight of the all- weather interceptor was so impressive that an order was soon placed for 48 F-89 aircraft.
