The Avro Lancaster became one of the most important heavy bombers operated by RAF Bomber Command during WWII. Developed from the Avro Manchester, the Lancaster combined a large internal bomb load with excellent range and performance. The B.I and B.III were among its principal wartime variants, with the B.III distinguished primarily by its Packard-built Merlin engines. Lancasters were used for major bombing operations throughout Europe and also carried specialised weapons for missions such as the famous Dambusters raid.
