The Focke-Wulf Fw190 served alongside the Messerschmitt Bf109 to defend Germany from the middle stages of WWII through to the war's end. Its air-cooled engine was a rarity among contemporary European fighters, and the type's combination of manoeuvrability, survivability, and ease of maintenance made it hugely popular among pilots. The A-3 variant appeared in 1942 and proved a formidable opponent for British aircraft, even as the balance of air power began to shift following the Battle of Britain.
