The F-14 Tomcat was developed for the U.S. Navy as a long-range fleet defence fighter and became famous for its variable-sweep wings, powerful radar and ability to carry the AIM-54 Phoenix long-range air-to-air missile. The late-model F-14A incorporated a number of improvements over earlier aircraft and remained an important part of U.S. Navy carrier aviation for decades.
