The He 219 was developed specifically for the demanding night-fighter role and achieved an extraordinary debut in June 1943, when a prototype reportedly shot down five RAF Lancaster bombers. The A-7 represented the final production variant and was equipped with DB 603G engines to improve high-altitude performance. Only 268 examples were manufactured, but the aircraft became an important part of the Luftwaffe's night-fighter force.
