The Ilyushin Il-2 was one of the most important Soviet combat aircraft of WWII and was designed specifically to attack enemy troops, vehicles and fortified positions. Its heavily armoured cockpit and engine areas provided protection from ground fire, while cannon, machine guns, bombs and rockets gave it considerable ground-attack capability. The Il-2 served extensively on the Eastern Front and became closely associated with Soviet close-air-support operations.
