The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate entered service in Spring 1944 and was primarily tasked with defending the Japanese home islands against attacks by B-29 bombers and carrier aircraft. Following the war, the U.S. military evaluated the aircraft and considered it to be the best Japanese fighter of WWII.
