The Focke-Wulf Fw190 served alongside the Messerschmitt Bf109 as one of the Luftwaffe's two primary fighters through the middle stages of WWII. Its air-cooled radial engine was unusual among contemporary European fighters, and the combination of manoeuvrability, toughness, and ease of maintenance made it highly popular with pilots. The A-3 variant, which appeared in 1942, proved a formidable opponent for British aircraft even as the strategic balance in the air war began to shift.
