The P-47 was the first single-seat fighter to combine a supercharger with a 2,000hp engine, giving it high-altitude capability comparable to bombers. The early-production P-47D represented here earned the "Razorback" nickname from the distinctive shape of its upper fuselage behind the cockpit. Its combination of high speed, heavy armament, one-tonne payload and robust construction made it effective in both bomber escort and ground-attack missions.
